Sitemap Meaning in Plain English
A sitemap should normally contain canonical, indexable pages the website wants found. It can be generated dynamically or maintained as a file.
Sitemaps complement internal links and crawlable navigation; they do not repair weak pages, blocked crawling, incorrect canonicals, or server errors.
Example
A service website might list its homepage, service pages, useful articles, tools, and substantial glossary pages while excluding private or duplicate URLs.
Why It Matters
A clean sitemap gives crawlers a reliable inventory and can make new or deeply nested pages easier to discover.
